‘The Essence of Villa Arconati’ addresses the problems related to preservation, decay, and reuse of cultural heritage sites. This investigation is based on the search of links amongst traditions, transformation, and change, while adopting the concept of Genius Loci, the spirit of a place. The site where the transformation takes place is Villa Arconati at Castellazzo di Bollate, a seventeenth-century Lombard ‘villa of delight’.
After careful investigations as essential elements for the villa were defined as water, food, wine and wild flowers. Under the premises of protection, a program for the entire territory of the villa and the surrounding grounds is introduced, incorporating those four elements in order to give a new ray of light to the site and integrated once again as an active participant in the social life of nowadays.
